When I created the identity for Cozumel Reef Co., I wanted our logo to represent more than scuba diving. I wanted it to represent Cozumel, its reefs, and the incredible biodiversity found beneath the surface.

That is why I chose the Splendid Toadfish (Sanopus splendidus).

One of Cozumel’s most special residents

The Splendid Toadfish was first scientifically described from Cozumel in 1974 and was originally considered endemic to the island. More recent records have documented the species in other parts of the Caribbean, including Belize, so it is no longer considered exclusive to Cozumel. However, its distribution remains very restricted, and Cozumel continues to be one of the most important places to encounter this remarkable fish.

Mexico’s National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) lists the Splendid Toadfish as one of the representative species of the Arrecifes de Cozumel protected area.

Unlike many of the colorful fish that constantly move around the reef, the toadfish prefers to stay close to its shelter. You will often find it tucked into a crevice, beneath a ledge, or inside a small reef cave. It is a predator that feeds on small fish, snails, worms, and other small marine animals.

Finding one is rarely about luck. It is about knowing where to look—and taking the time to look closely.

A symbol of biodiversity

For me, that is what makes the Splendid Toadfish such a good symbol for Cozumel.

When people think about Caribbean diving, they often picture turtles, sharks, rays, and large schools of colorful fish. But a healthy reef is much more than its most spectacular animals. It is a complex community made up of corals, sponges, fish, crustaceans, and countless smaller organisms.

The toadfish represents that less obvious side of biodiversity.

Its restricted distribution also makes the health of its habitat especially important. The Splendid Toadfish is currently classified as Endangered by the IUCN, with its limited range and fragmented habitat contributing to its conservation concern.

Protecting Cozumel’s reefs therefore means protecting much more than beautiful dive sites. It means protecting the homes of species that depend on these ecosystems.

Why it represents Cozumel Reef Co.

This is also the kind of diving we want to share at Cozumel Reef Co.

We believe in slowing down, diving in small groups, and giving our divers the opportunity to really observe the reef—not just looking for the biggest animal, but noticing the details and understanding how the different pieces of the ecosystem fit together.

The Splendid Toadfish represents that philosophy perfectly.

It is unique, elusive, and easy to overlook—just like many of the small treasures that make Cozumel’s underwater world so special.

And because its habitat depends on a healthy reef, responsible diving matters. Good buoyancy, avoiding contact with the reef, and observing marine life without touching or disturbing it are simple ways we can all help protect Cozumel’s underwater world.

So, when you see the little fish in the Cozumel Reef Co. logo, I hope you see more than a logo.
